"surrender"

surrender

"give me all your money and everything you own,
your pride, and all your achievements and awards.

give me your body, your laughing eyes, your smile.

give me your family, your friends, your favorite pooch.

while you're at it, give me the fields of your youth,
your college romances, your lovers, your husband,
your regrets, your sins.

give me everything.

everything,"

says Death, flicking ashes on my sleeve, his Marlboro dangerously close to the oxygen machine.

"Want one?"

"You don't have any Kools?"

He lights three cigarettes, gives one to the nurse, who can't see him, and one to me.

"She was so young.  I hate it when they go so soon," says the nurse.

She draws the curtain around my hospital bed.

"the day of"

The November Poem-a-Day Challenge starts today.  Prompts provided by Robert Lee BrewerPoetic Asides Blog

the day of

the day after quitting,
it doesn't matter what.

really the day of.

and he's an asshole to you,
and you can't figure out why.

there's been no communication
since June.

he expects you to do your job,
but there's been no communication
since June.

a ballot in your mailbox is all.

then you figure it out
it's crystal clear
after all this time.

you should have quit earlier.

much earlier.

"Pause"

Pause

Between the in breath
and the out breath
is a pause.

A moment.

A full stop.

There I rest
and take a break
from this world
its pain and joys.

Rest here with me.
