The Milky Way Galaxy Blues

They must be aliens

from another galaxy,

furry or smooth.

Animals, they look at you

with such wisdom.

But we're stupid humans,

no denying that.

Feathers or fins,

more than just another

species.

I know

I know that I share

most of my DNA

with Redwoods

and Weeping Willows,

even more with Groupers

and Gorillas.

Then again,

maybe we're the aliens.

Do you ever get the feeling

you don't belong?

Every day.

Every single day.

"Inside Pitch"

Inside Pitch

I wish I could be

comfortable.

Instead I'm a ball

of stress, curled up

on the inside.

On the outside,

feet dangling off

the bed, pen in one hand,

all nonchalant.

My ribs have grabbed

my chest, my heart

in a vice grip.

Garden-variety anxiety.

Triggered by the World Series

on TV here, and in the rec room,

three hospital stays, three dark Octobers. 

R.P. McMurphy would

be green with envy.

Clay Pigeon

My heart starts

to break

even

before the first shot is fired.

I try to distance myself

to create a space

from which to love.

But you crowd

me into a corner.

Is this me,

            snarling?

This bad habit

breaking up with me

has to stop.

Your aim's been pretty good

so far.

"Pull!"

Left to clean up the pottery shards

spread on the ground

a terracotta blanket.

"For Now"

For Now

I'm staying put,

for now.

Staying in one spot,

in one loft,

in one life,

at least for today.

But I'm planning,

on going.

Not soon,

soon enough.

Not tomorrow,

or next week,

or next month,

but by next year.

I'll be gone.

It's the waiting

I can't stand.

You could wither up

and die waiting for housing.

Extenuating circumstances:

they've made it impossible

for me to change or grow

or be myself.

So, I'm going.
