"Race or Marathon"

Race or Marathon

We haven't even started.
I haven't even started
            spoiling you.

You haven't even started
            driving me to distraction.

Between chaste kisses
and not so chaste everything
else, I know, we haven't
even started.

"Start your engines."

An Open Letter to the Universe

Dear Universe,

I don't deserve this.
Thank you, anyway.

LOVE

"Weather Report"

Weather Report

It's a dark and stormy night
not disputing that
rained all day
now the wind's kicked up.

But… the lights are on,
the heater's going,
music's playing on the stereo,
the Spice Girls.

If it blows any harder
power will go out,
I'll be in the dark.

Nothing new there.

"Left Over"

Left Over

We live with what's leftover,
lessons learned or not,
after the divorce
after the hospital,
after hopes dashed.

We live with it
whether we like it or not
(we don't)
and try not to dwell
on what came before
on what constituted
a happy day
before all this happened.

I've had happy days
like sunlight in Hell,
you wonder who left a window open
and when it will close again.

You've opened a window in my heart.
Let the light in.
Let it in.

"Life's Little Luxuries"

Life's Little Luxuries

Your hand on my hip
fingers stroking skin
in time to the music.

Kisses that taste
like pot and Listerine
all mixed together.

The taste of you
in my mouth
sweeter than wine.

"On the Inside"

On the Inside

Like talking to the wall,
doesn't matter if I get
an answer back,
just an echo.

Like a bat finding my way
with sonar and highly
developed sense of smell,
bouncing off the trees.

I've spent so many
years wrapped in this cocoon
that keeps people out,
keeps me safe.

Safe no more.
Safe no more.
