"Hanging in a Museum"

Hanging in a Museum

A summer night,
two people on a covered porch
a young man, a young woman.

Darkness painted in that Edward
Hopper shade of black,
complete and total.

The porch lights are on.
He's talking, she's listening.
I'm standing out there in the dark
with no hope at all.

Here, it's blustery and rainy,
a fall afternoon.

A few things are the same,
a man and a woman,
one talking, the other listening.

A few things are different,
no covered porch here,
sky as grey as a battleship
on a high sea.

And in this particular painting,
no hope at all.
